The New York Yankees and Manny Ramirez – Should They Sign Him?

The latest news wires have been burning up lately with the rumor that the New York Yankees, who have already burned about 400 million on free agents, are considering bringing Manny Ramirez to the Bronx. The Yankees do have the money despite having some of the richest contracts around. The question is, are the rumors true? It depends upon who you ask.

According to the Yankees brass, Manny Ramirez is not likely to become a New York Yankee. Then again, if the Yankees really are pursuing Manny, they are not going to tell anyone about it. They would much rather stay under the radar so as not to lose any strategy points with other teams in the market. As it stands, the only public suitors for Manny are the Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. These two teams are both trying to sign Manny.

How much money would it take to sign the slugger? In the neighborhood of seventy five million dollars over several years is a good guess. The Yankees, even though they spent money like crazy this offseason, have the funds to do it. The problem is that it would severely limit them (by Yankee standards) with future moves. The Yankees saved a great deal of money by moving some off season talent as well.

Manny Ramirez added to the Yankee lineup is a scary proposition for the opposing teams in Major League Baseball. They are already loaded with the acquisition of Mark Teixiera, and putting Manny between Tex and Alex Rodriguez would just be unfair. The Yankees would have a lineup that would be head and shoulders above the rest, if they are not already.

Chances are, this is just more rumor than truth. The Yankees would really be handcuffed in future endeavors by signing Manny, and I can not see them going full blown into the Manny drama. The city of New York would likely be a return of the pressure and stress that Manny hated in Boston. Still, it is an intriguing thought and the Yankees can not be ignored as a possibility.COPYRIGHT © 2008 – 2009 All Sports PRO. All rights reserved.
