What Makes March Madness So Special?

The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is unlike any spectacle on Earth. No Championship in any sport comes close to the excitement and duration of March Madness? What is it about the tournament though that makes it so incredibly engaging? This article will look at several key elements to college basketball’s national championship that makes it special when compared to other sports.

The first thing that makes the tournament so special is the format. A huge tournament with all of the best college basketball teams from around the country in a win or go home tournament is the ultimate way to determine a college basketball champion. The excitement that builds from round to round is unlike any other tournament in the world. The underdogs and the favorites are on equal footing as far as elimination, and that makes for drama. Drama is a very good thing in sports.

Another great thing about March Madness is the fact that college fans are the most rabid, dedicated, and rambunctious fans on the planet. Having gone to a college is the ultimate reason to cheer for them, and even if you did not, you can still latch on to your local colleges. Every single person in America has some type of ties to some college, and so are often fans by default. Very few people are completely uninterested in the NCAA tourney. Even nonfans are usually in a bracket office pool.

In my opinion, the number one reason that March Madness reigns supreme is because basketball, and college basketball in particular, is loaded with fast paced, exciting action from buzzer to buzzer. The pace of the game never gets old, and the games in the tourney tend to be nail biters as everyone is putting the best they have on the floor. The effort level and intensity is huge. Some players are playing potentially their final college game, and that is some mighty powerful motivation to win a college basketball national championship.

The NCAA really needs to take a look at a similar format for college football if they do not want to alienate their fans. The Bowl system is severely outdated, and a new and exciting tournament would cause an explosion of popularity in college football. Much like the NCAA basketball tournament, the fans will come and pay their money. Regardless of what college football does, however, nothing will ever match March Madness for the bottom line…excitement.COPYRIGHT © 2008 – 2009 All Sports PRO. All rights reserved.
