The Duke Blue Devils do not mind a mudpit win every now and then. Getting down and dirty in the defensive world of college basketball is in Duke’s comfort zone anyway. For the largest part of the ACC match up, Duke could not hit the broad side of a barn. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets seemed mired in that funk the entire game. Christian Laettner, a six foot eleven inch center, played for the Duke Blue Devils from 1988 until 1992, where he won back-to-back championships in 1991 and 1992. Laettner is considered one of the greatest college basketball players of all time. He went on to be drafted by the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1992 draft and played for 13 years in the NBA with the Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards. The Boston Celtics are the reigning NBA champions and with the core of their championship team almost intact, including all-stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen bannering the Celtics again this season, were heavily favored to repeat as NBA champions this season. The Celtics started the season out with a bang, the owners of a 19 game winning streak, their marquee players exhibiting their all-star status forms and their supporting cast providing excellent contribution, especially point guard Rajon Rondo whose over-all game up to December was getting some calls for an All-star berth.
